In this interview, Resistance Bureau co-producer Jeffrey Smith speaks to Ambassador Karim Soumana and international lawyer, Reed Brody, about the ongoing two-year detention of Niger’s democratically elected president, Mohamed Bazoum. Following a military coup on 23 July 2023, President Bazoum and his wife have been held as hostages by military authorities while the political and human rights situations have vastly deteriorated across the country. Among those calling for President Bazoum’s immediate and unconditional release are several African presidents, as well as the U.N. Working Group on Arbitrary Detention.
